Weight training using machines and calisthenics are two distinct approaches to strength training, each with its own set of advantages and differences:
Resistance Source
Calisthenics: Primarily relies on bodyweight for resistance, with exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, planks, and squats
Weight Training on Machines: External weights that move in a guided, fixed-path that provide a controlled range of motion and a consistent resistance curve
Equipment
Calisthenics: Requires less equipment compared to traditional weight training
Weight Training on Machines: Requires access to specific gym equipment
Functional Strength, Balance & Coordination
Calisthenics: Focus is on whole body movements with gains in strength and enhanced proprioception through dynamic movements natural to the body
Weight Training on Machines: Effective at isolating muscle groups but takes balance and coordination out of the picture
Muscle Mass
Calisthenics: High capacity for increasing muscle mass if basic principles of weight training are applied. Calisthenics athletes generally have a lean, natural look
Weight Training: Effective at increasing muscle mass through targeted, isolation movements though it can promote muscle imbalances. Bodybuilders adhere to culture of having bigger muscles, often with the use of performance enhancing drugs
Flexibility
Calisthenics: Requires increased flexibility and mobility to perform movements effectively
Weight Training: Generally does not emphasize nor require much flexibility
Progression
Calisthenics: Progressing in calisthenics involves a steeper learning curve compared to other forms of training. It requires mastering both modified and new exercises, understanding how to perform them correctly, and learning how to adapt exercises based on your current level. While bodyweight exercises can be more challenging, they yield better long-term progress and results
Weight Training: No matter what level you’re working at, you perform the same movement but with adjusted intensities. There is a clear way to adjust weight increments which makes it easier to track and control progressions
Portability and Accessibility
Calisthenics: Calisthenics has the freedom to be done almost anywhere
Weight Training on Machines: Limited to gym settings with necessary equipment
The choice between weight training on machines and calisthenics depends on individual goals, preferences, and circumstances. If you’re looking for a more engaging, fun, and rewarding training experience, calisthenics may be a better option. It offers the flexibility to adapt exercises and routines while providing a sense of achievement and progress. Some individuals may choose to incorporate elements of both into their training regimen to achieve a well-rounded approach to strength and fitness.
